Meet The Artist

Somewhere between the outer reaches of convention and predictability lies the ironic reality of artist Kata (KAY - Tuh) Billups. Kata’s world is one in which revered icons of popular American culture get playfully jostled – which, of course, in turn gives all of us a collective nose tweak. Kata sees our fascination with heroes, our fluid sense of right and wrong, and our eternal quest for beauty and youth, and is not afraid to call us on it.

And like many before her – people like Mark Twain, Charlie Chaplin and Richard Pryor – she understands that if you’re delivering us a message Americans might not want to hear, it’s best make us laugh while doing so.

Kata’s isn’t so much a world of velvet Elvis paintings, but one in which the King parks his VW microbus on a roadside to sell velvet paintings of himself. It’s not so much a place where the Beatles re-unite, but get together to watch black and white reruns of The Andy Griffith Show.

A truly gifted, classically schooled artist, Kata was greatly influenced while living in Nashville by a number of untrained local artists – people who relied less on technique and more on vision and courage. Add Nashville’s love affair with popular music, and it was not long before Kata’s one-of-a-kind style began to develop. Since then she has created a growing body of work that continues to excite both critics and collectors alike.

Please enjoy these samples of Kata Billups’ deft artistic touch. They represent just a sample of her playfulness, her unabashed sense of irony and her unique insight into the American consciousness. And if you’d like to purchase an original or commission Kata for a special project, she’d be delighted to talk to you personally.

Thank you and enjoy the tour.
